Apollo 11 Astronauts Signed "Splashdown Celebration Flag" Neil Armstrong Buzz Aldrin Michael Collins Autograph ITEM SOLD
This American flag has been signed by Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin on one side, and Neil Armstrong on the other side, in blue ballpoint pen. The flag, which measures about 11 1/2" x 17 1/2", is a "splashdown celebration flag", which were waived about in celebration by employees at the Johnson Space Center following Apollo 11's splashdown on July 24, 1969. The signatures were acquired the second week of August 1969, by a technician at the Lunar Receiving Laboratory in building 37 at what was then the Manned Spacecraft Center, later re-named the Johnson Space Center, where the astronauts were kept in quarantine. The flag is in overall very good shape, other than some creases, having been kept folded in a plastic bag for decades. The flag includes the wood stick pole with a gold plastic pointed tip, which has an overall length of about 21". Adding to the rarity of this piece, Neil Armstrong later announced that he would not sign on an American flag, and even refrained from signing over them in photos of himself. Neil has since refrained from signing autographs altogether.
